Takeaway: Powerful suction, versatile attachments, relatively lightweight,

Thank you to Best Buy for sending me this vacuum for free to try. One thing that I’ve been seeing a lot lately is companies like Dyson’s commitment to using less plastic in their packaging, so it’s cool to see that nearly everything in the box that isn’t the vacuum is recyclable. You’ll receive the main vacuum body, an extra battery, Wall Dok, two AC power adapters, extension tube, Motorbar XL floor roller, Fluffy Optic floor roller, hair screw, dual brush nozzle, and quickstart guides.

The quickstart guide shows you how to assemble the vacuum, what the tools are used for, and how to operate the machine. It’s illustrated and in full color so it’s pretty simple to follow. The main vacuum body houses the motor and HEPA filter, dustbin, and removable battery. It’s got a nice large handle and a soft rubber cushion just above it. The unit weighs a little over 5.5 lbs with the battery installed. A red tab on the underside of the dust bin lets you empty it without touching its contents by simply sliding it forward; this opens the lid and drops the contents right into your trash. Every deattachable component is easy to snap in and remove from the vacuum and nearly all of them are marked with red buttons, levers, or tabs. The battery simply clicks in under the handgrip. Its charging port is located at the front of the battery, and you can plug it in to charge whether its removed or installed in the vacuum. When charging, blue LEDs on the sides of the battery will pulse. What’s nice is that there are two chargers included, so you can charge both batteries at the same time. If installed in the vacuum while charging, the LCD will briefly display the charge progress. While you can’t use the vacuum during charging, pressing the power button will light up the screen so you can view the capacity.

From front to back the unit measures 17” and with the battery installed is 11” tall. The diameter of the canister is about 5.5 inches which can hold ½ gallon of dust and debris. On the back side facing you is the LCD display and red power button. After turning it on, it defaults to the last mode used and displays a bar graph of captured particles (categorized by size in micrometers) and the remaining run time. The silver button on the LCD toggles through the modes: Eco, medium, and boost. Eco lowers the suction power but doubles your run time giving you a max of 75 minutes per battery. Medium, or auto mode, delivers moderate suction which adjusts in power based on the amount of debris measured by the Piezo sensor. Boost mode consumes the most battery for maximum suction but has the least run time, about 7 minutes on a full charge. When you power off the vacuum, the LCD shows a summary of all the particles captured.

The extension tube for this vacuum measures 25” long and is primarily a bright blue aluminum tube with plastic connectors at each end. Built-in at the top end is a removable short wand that you can release by pressing the red button and pulling it out. It can be used with or without the brush at the tip by pressing the two red buttons at the sides and sliding it up or down. This wand is 10-11” depending on whether or not you use the brush tip. This tool works great for tight spaces and crevices where the other tools and rollers can’t reach. The extension tube doesn’t work without this wand installed at the top, but replacing it is as simple as pushing the smaller wand into the tube. You don’t even have to retract the brush first, as it will do so automatically. Then to attach to the vacuum, just press it into the hole at the end.

The Motorbar XL is a 12.5” wide floor roller also suitable for rugs and carpets. It articulates on a ball hinge giving it 180° of motion side-to-side and nearly 90° front to back. It’ll clip into the bottom of the extension tube or directly to the motor unit itself. The red slider at the front allows you to set the airflow amount by opening or blocking off its vents to decrease or increase suction respectively. Minus is less suction for delicate flooring or deep pile rugs, and plus is more for hard floors and heavy soiled rugs and carpets. For everything else, you can leave the setting in the middle. The housing on the roller is clear so you can see if you have any wraps causing a jam and hair removal vanes help prevent long hairs from tangling in the roller. Pulling up on the red tab on the side lets you remove the internal roller for cleaning and servicing. I use this attachment when I clean our stairs and second floor which is fully carpeted. It does a great job pulling out trapped dust and debris from the carpet pile, and on the steps I can use it without the extension tube which I find a bit easier to maneuver.

The Fluffy Optic roller is specially designed for use on hard floors. Its width is 9-3/4” and 3” front to back with a clear front. It uses a fluffy brush and has soft gliders at the back to prevent damage to your floors. On the right-hand-side this green window houses a laser module which sends a beam in front of the roller to highlight dust and debris in the vacuum’s path. The laser is visible even in bright lighting and works pretty well. You’ll see larger particles breaking up the laser beam and casting shadows, help you locate and capture them more easily. The roller brush is also removable for cleaning or servicing. The neck of this attachment has less range of motion than the Motorbar XL and only goes about 45° to each side but can tilt back to near horizontal.

The hair roller screw is designed for picking up long hair or pet hair on furniture like mattresses, couches, and stairs. It’s 5.5 inches wide and like the other tools, it can be attached to the extension tube or main unit. While the neck on this attachment doesn’t swivel, its pitch can be adjust about 45°. The conical design of the brush helps to direct hair towards the smaller end to be picked up without tangling. This brush is great for areas like the bathroom floor which tends to accumulate hair, especially around the tub and in corners. It also works great on upholstered furniture, if you have pets that have a favorite chair or pillow that picks up a lot of sheddings. The last included attachment is the wide nozzle and brush. It measures 3” wide and 7” long and can be used with the brush bristles retracted. I find this brush useful for hard to reach places like the corners of ceilings, where cobwebs collect, in nooks and crannies, and even along the top of floor moldings.

The Wall Dok measures 8” tall, 4.5” wide, and 3” thick and can store up to two accessories by snapping them into the connectors at hte bottom. However, with larger attachments like the rollers you’ll really only be able to fit one as they will block access to the second storage point. Even the hair screw won’t allow you to get a second accessory in there, so that was a little disappointing. The Wall Dok can be oounted on your wall using the included hardware and you can also place the connector of the AC charger inside of it so that when the vacuum is placed int he dock for storage, it will charge at the same time. The vacuum is fitted with a washable HEPA filter at the back, that cleans the air that exits the vacuum, capturing microscopic particles down to 0.1 microns including viruses. It can be removed with a simple twist and rinsed off in the sink. Just remember to let it dry completely before reinstalling on the vacuum. While there is a MyDyson app, this vacuum isn’t smart and doesn’t connect with it. The app is primarily used to register the vacuum for warranty purposes with quick access to instructions, support, and buying accessories.

Overall, the Dyson gen5outsize is a powerhouse of a cordless stick vacuum. It has powerful suction that goes up to 135000 rpm in Boost mode, though medium mode tends to do just fine for regular cleanings. With the two batteries you can get up to 70 minutes of use on Eco mode and the various included attachments help tackle almost any situation. With the large bin capacity and wide rollers, you’ll be finishing faster and emptying out the collection bin less often. The particle counter is kind of fun and also serves to adjust the suction power automatically for dirtier areas. The main considerations would be its high price and weight, which is a bit heavier than most cordless vacs, but getting your cleaning done and a free workout at the same time? Now that’s multi-tasking.
